Start Small, Grow Happy

You don’t need a perfect plot or a sprawling backyard to start gardening. A single barrel on the deck. A cluster of repurposed pots on a front step. A tucked-away corner in a community garden. A windowsill with a view. Everyone can carve out a little space and make it theirs.

A garden doesn’t need to be massive to be magical.

I started one of my first gardens in a half-whiskey barrel on the deck. It wasn’t fancy—just some soil, a few herbs, and the hope that I could keep them alive. That little container gave me more joy than I expected. Morning coffee alongside fresh mint. Tiny basil leaves that made me feel like a chef. The quiet satisfaction of watching something grow because of me.

That’s the magic.

Start with one container. One herb you love to cook with. One flower that makes you smile every time you walk by. You don’t have to “go big” to begin. You just have to start. Cozy gardening is about cultivating joy, on your own terms.

It’s not about perfection. It’s not about doing everything all at once. It’s about working with what you have, in the season you’re in.

So if you’re waiting for the “right time” or the “right space,” consider this your gentle nudge: claim a little patch of green and make it yours. Grow something you love to eat. Or something that loves you back just by being beautiful.

Start small. Grow happy. The rest will follow!
